A long time ago I listened to an interview of Elke Sommer, the famed

movie star. When she was asked what caused her divorce, she stated: “My passion turned into compassion.” I’ve thought about her statement a lot over the years. It was the poignant confession that while love still remained, her passion for her lover dissipated. Put another way, what was once her sexual

passion became the ordinary caring compassion of any human companion or friend. As a husband and wife drift away from their sexual joy, it is a sign that something is amiss in the relationship. Sex is to marriage as the Canary is to the coal mine. It is a marital life sign that needs some attention. This is

especially true in a young marriage where health issues do not interfere with sex. The cruelest thing that can happen in a marriage is for a lover’s passion to turn into compassion, because this is a very slow process and indicative of a sexless marriage.
