Chapter 19: Myth—Sexuality Doesn’t Matter

Teri DeSario and K.C. had a 1970’s vintage love song called “Yes, I’m
Ready” which expressed the uncertainty of our love choice and all of the possibilities associated with it. The song also speaks to the mystery of our heart’s love choice. The unknowing aspects of one’s love for another are mentally set aside, when the heart makes the choice to love. The lyrics state,
“I am ready to fall in love” and “I’m willing to learn.” Part of the lyrics is an admission that we remain ignorant of how to love our lover, how to hold his or her hand and the lovers ask one another, “Are you ready?” Both of the lovers respond, “Yes I’m ready. Ready to love you, hold you, kiss you, want you, squeeze you, and need you. O, I’m ready. Yes, I’m ready.”
When I chose Jackie in my heart, I basically told her “I am ready to fall in love.” When I chose God, same thing. “I’m ready to fall in love.” That is what I feel in my heart, soul and spirit towards you.
God is right. First comes the choice of the heart in terms of its commitment. Then comes the statement from our heart: “I’m ready to fall in love.” Out of the heart’s commitment flows true love. It is the kind of love that can
laugh its way through life. It is the kind of love that can also see the humor in God’s response to a very non-specific prayer. Reflecting back, you know He answered the prayer in His humorous way and not in the way you wanted. It is the kind of love that sees the humor in God’s directions even
when they challenge your earthly perspectives on foolishness. Ed
There was a lot more that I wrote to this special woman. For the moment we’ve decided to just be friends. I’ve already taught you that the
commitment of the heart must be from both individuals. That is how you know that God is involved. My prayer is that God will tell this woman what He has told me. We’ll see where it all winds up. However, perhaps the only reason He put me through this exercise is so I could write to you that love is
indeed a choice. And once love is activated, marriage is the next choice. And after marriage, sex becomes a choice. If the heart is committed to each other, your sexuality will work itself out in the freedom of the marriage bed. Love is not like magnets with polar opposites clinging together. All love is a
heart choice and a willingness to learn to love another to the fullest possible human ability. This “fullness” only takes place in the sanctity of marriage.
