Chapter 19: Myth—Sexuality Doesn’t Matter

“On the contrary, when one of the body systems interferes with or inhibits this natural building cycle, arousal and/or response may be difficult.

As a rule, emotional barriers are what get in the way of the sexual response cycle.” Take the following Scripture for illustration and its implications.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,

that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1

Some Christians might interpret this verse to mean we are not to engage in sex. If so, they have the ultimate emotional barrier to sex. But, let’s get real here. God has created our bodies to have and enjoy sex and therefore, such an interpretation would be spiritually ignorant. Remember that Paul also told married couples it was their duty to one another to have

sex. A more accurate interpretation would be the following two actions:

1. Force your body to engage only in moral sex. 2. Force your body to be a slave unto righteousness.

Anyone who eliminates sexual immorality and is a slave to God’s righteousness will find that they have offered their bodies as a “living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” These two items alone will make

you friendly to God but an enemy of the world. Yet, they do not deny your God given gift of sex. Nor did Paul ever teach you to deny your sexuality.

“Within this arousal cycle we need to differentiate between the two

branches of our nervous system and their effects during the sexual process. The autonomic or involuntary nervous system has two branches: the sympathetic nervous system (S.N.S.) and the parasympathetic nervous system (P.N.S.). These function without our willing them or even being

conscious of them. They affect our bodies’ responses in exactly opposite ways. Thus, together they can either increase or decrease the activity of our body organs. The P.N.S. has an up building effect on the body. It is in action when we are relaxed and more passive. The S.N.S. is our ‘fight or

flight,’ that is, our energy system. It goes into action when we are anxious or intensely aroused emotionally.”
