To understand John 10:30, let’s turn to Matthew 19:4-6.

“And he answered and said to them, have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘for this reason a man shall leave his

father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:4-6

Jesus states: “Man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

Jesus says — “The Two Shall Become One Flesh!”

My wife and I will be married 39 years in less than two months. Our friends Dean and Jackie have been married 43 years. Our friends Vern and Inga have been married even longer. Recently I posed this question to all

three couples. Did you and your spouse become one flesh like Jesus taught? Everyone answered yes, but how can that be? If you can understand this teaching of Jesus on “oneness of flesh,” you can understand what he means when he says “I and the Father are one.” Think about it for a moment.

In each marriage there are two people physically walking around, yet one flesh according to Jesus. All three marriages testify to the veracity of Jesus. Got any answers yet? Well, simply put, what Jesus is talking about is

a “spiritual oneness of the flesh” that exists in true marriages. If you have never experienced this, you might think it odd. However, it is true. Jesus is teaching us about a spiritual fact that transcends our human ability to reason physical matters. Yet, this one flesh is something that everyone “knows”

when he or she has it, even if they cannot explain it.

In the simplest explanation, Jesus is using a spiritual metaphor to explain the holy relationship between husband and wife. No doubt it is more complicated and profound, most likely beyond full human understanding.
