Myth—Abortion Doesn’t Matter

The Stone commentary 24 of Genesis 9:5 reads: “The Torah places

another limitation on man’s right to take a life: God will demand an accounting from one who spills his own blood, for a human being’s life belongs not to him but to God.”

The Jewish Study Bible, 25 adds the following commentary: “Genesis 9:5-6: By man in v. 6 may be more accurately rendered as ‘in compensation for a human being.’ Human life is sharply distinguished from animal life; the idea that human beings are created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27)

requires a higher degree of respect for human life. In the Talmud 26, v. 5 is interpreted as a prohibition of killing oneself (b. B.K. 91b), and v. 6 is cited in support of the prohibition of abortion (b. Sanh. 57b). Jewish law strictly forbids suicide and allows abortion only in extreme situations and never for the purpose of birth control.”

1. All life belongs to God. a. Life of the parent belongs to God.

b. Life of the child belongs to God. 2. Every human’s blood has a life force contained in it. 3. The blood-life-force belongs to each human’s soul. 4. God requires an accounting of any shed human blood. 5. Any man who sheds blood will have his own blood shed.

6. God will demand the soul of the human who sheds human blood. 7. God created man in His image. 8. God commanded man to beget children.

If you can understand that our soul owns our blood’s life force, maybe you can then understand why God had the following dialogue with Cain.

And the Lord said, “What have you done? Listen, your

brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground!” Genesis 4:10 NRSV
