another child with Bathsheba. Solomon is the second child of Bathsheba by David’s semen and Solomon takes his place as the 14th generation from Abraham in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Perhaps the ultimate message of love and life from God is of Mary herself as an unwed mother. This unwed mother was not deprived of her child in an age when a woman pregnant out of wedlock would be stoned to death. God ensured that a loving man with a caring heart would protect

Mary. That is what my father did when he married my mother. She was an unwed mother with my sister Barbara. I can tell you that in all the years of my father’s life, Barb and I had no clue that we did not have the same father. All we both knew was my father’s love. That is what real love does. That is what God would ask of you and I concerning all children of the womb.

From the cross itself, Jesus Christ taught us to open up our hearts to love others. It doesn’t matter if a child is related. You can love all children and they can love you back. All you need is a heart that is open to love.

“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your

mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.” John 19:26-27 NRSV

I’m back into tears again as I reflect on how Christ’s message has

played a role in the life of Jackie and I. Many times we have opened our hearts to an unrelated person. We have offered them love and have received love. Our lives have been enriched because of that willingness to even love others as our own children. We can love the rape victim, the incest victim

and even the mother whose life is endangered by childbirth. Yet we would not just love the mother. We would also love the child of her womb. That is what God wants all of us do. He wants us to choose love and life!

The act of incest between Judah and Tamar was not a forced rape nor did Judah who was deceived willingly do it. There are other such acts of
