and even a series of unintended events that unfolds without any ability on our part to foresee or predict. I already taught you that we only see part of

the picture right now and that God sees the entire picture. I also taught you that in God’s Eternal Character, His bigger picture is always filled with items we do not have a clue about on this earth. If you don’t remember the “big picture” discussion, go back and study chapter 11.

The Chinese Grandfather Story

The issue of what is really good or bad reminds me of the story of an

old man in a small remote Chinese mountain village far away from any big city. A relative came to visit the old man one afternoon and asked: “How is it going?” The old man reported that his grandson had fallen off a horse while riding a few days ago and broke his leg in two places.

The relative said: “That’s very bad!”

The old man replied: “Actually, no, it was good. That very afternoon,

the Chinese army came to our small village and conscripted every young man the age of my grandson. They would not take him since he had broken his leg.”

The relative said: “That’s very good!”

The old man replied: “Actually, no, it was bad. The next day after the accident, my grandson developed a very bad leg infection that threatened to

take his life. If the army had just taken him, my grandson would have gotten some immediate medical care that would have prevented this life threatening leg infection.”

The relative said: “That’s very bad!”

The old man replied: “Actually, no, it was good. That next day …”

And so the story of the old man and his grandson unfolds and every time the relative thinks something is bad, it turns out good and vice versa. In this story, it is difficult to foretell what is really good or bad until the next
