It’s November 6th and our citizens of the United States have re-elected

President George W. Bush. The number one reason cited by voters in the election was “Moral Values.” 1 The United States has been teetering on the precipice of a moral abyss with God and He has been getting ready to turn His back on this great nation.

However, with the 2004 elections, we’ve managed to take a moral step back from the abyss. Are we now safe with God? Or, is there more that this great nation needs to do? This chapter exposes the Christian myth that

politics doesn’t matter. It begins by examining the Abortionite admonition to the moral voter that he or she “needs to consider the bigger picture.” Or as one person recently opined 2 in the Minneapolis StarTribune:

“I am a Christian Kerry supporter who awoke Wednesday to

the sobering fact that George W. Bush would most likely be our president for four more years. I was heartbroken, but this was nothing compared to how my coworkers’ gloating made me feel. One person looked me in the eye and with manic gleam

stated, ‘This is a win for all faith-based people.’ As a ‘faith- based person,’ I look to a statement Hubert Humphrey made to help make political decisions: ‘The moral test of government is how that government treats those in the dawn of life, the

children; those in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.’ ” Cindy, Bloomington MN

I agree the issue of “seeing the big picture” is what every Christian needs to consider. But, Cindy, come on, wouldn’t Hubert spin in his grave if he thought your quoting him suggested that the slaughter of millions of tiny babies via abortion didn’t fit his criteria? I think Hubert would believe that

abortion does mistreat “those in the dawn of life, the children.” If we cannot protect these babies, the weakest members of the human family, indeed the government has failed its moral test. The majority of citizens saw that Kerry and his party did not offer godly morality. They only offered a return to the

destructive policies that almost destroyed our society’s moral underpinning. Indeed, it is a “bigger picture” that Cindy and others need to understand.
