Myth—Giving 10% Is A Tithe

You’ve got to admit that the picture in the preceding graphic is far

different than the picture the tithe preacher peddles, isn’t it? Before I get into some specific false tithe teachings, let me give you another illustration, which astounded me when God revealed it to me. What I want you to see is that God’s intention for the tithe as taught in Deuteronomy 14:22-29 had two

basic elements to it. First was the fear and worship of the Lord. Moses makes it clear that you showed your fear of the Lord by consuming your tithe and rejoicing before the Lord for two out of every three years. The second element is taking care of the destitute or those in need like the local

ministers who served God. Moses makes it clear that you accomplished this by bringing your tithe to the food shelf (storehouse) in the third year.

Forget about the “money” the preacher wants for the moment. I will discuss it further in a while. For now I want you to mentally compare the essence of the “Tithe Law” as contained in Deuteronomy 14:22-29 to the

groups of people who Jesus will say: “I never knew you.” Remember that the first group is cited in Matthew 7:21-23 and Jesus says that they were “lawless.” This is just another way of saying they did not obey the Law! But, which Laws? Well, for starters, what about the Law requirement to do

what is right; ensure justice; execute mercy; and, fidelity (or faithfulness) to the Lord? Can we sweep these Law requirements under the carpet, even if we can sweep the tithe under the carpet? Then there is the issue of caring.
