Myth—Giving 10% Is A Tithe

[28] At the end of every three years you shall bring forth all the

tithe of your increase the same year and lay it up within your towns.

[29] And the Levite [because he has no part or inheritance with

you] and the stranger or temporary resident, and the fatherless and the widow who are in your towns shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.” Deuteronomy 14:22-29 AMP

Jesus’ Tithe Instructions

Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders

(hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law—right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought [particularly] to have

done, without neglecting the others.” Matthew 23:23 AMP

Take some time and reflect on what God’s Word actually says about

the tithe in the above Bible verses. Pay attention to the fact that instead of turning over your tithe to God’s minister, you are supposed to only “share” a portion of your tithe “food” with him. This is a big contrast to the Word of Faith Church teachings. I used the Amplified Bible in the above citations.

Both the bracketed and parenthesized words are how the Amplified Bible presents these verses. The small caps “Lord” is my own clarification to indicate it is Yahweh [God] that is referred to and not Jesus. One Amplified Bible goal is to bring a more robust understanding of both the Hebrew and

Greek into the translated English text. This is the reason for the use of bracketed and parenthesized words. In the last chapter I used the NIV or New International Version for most Bible verses to illustrate that it doesn’t matter, which Bible you use. Some Bibles express a verse better than others

and multiple translations clear up errors. I use the Amplified Bible in this chapter, because it is popular in Word of Faith (AFCM) churches. Copyright 2005 Edward G. Palmer, All Rights Reserved. Book of Edward—Chapter 17
