They thought they had it in the eternal bag with God for a variety of reasons. Christianity has just consolidated all the reasons of the Israelites into the personage of Jesus Christ so that Christians can have only one good reason.

A lot of Christians like the concept of majority rule. You know that 51% of corporate shareholders control most corporations. A simple 51% majority also elects our congressmen and senators. 51% outweighs 49% in our way of thinking, doesn’t it? That is the democratic way, isn’t it? No doubt that many preachers in the past and present view sinning with God

exactly that way. On balance, they say, I am good; because my life’s 51% righteousness certainly outweighs my life’s 49% evil. To this extent, you can view life as a simple stack of deeds. How about 100 for illustration?

Each deed in life can be either good or evil. You are the one that gets to decide. If your actions in life choose to support evil like the Episcopal bishops that voted to support the sin of homosexuality in the church of God, then that counts as an evil deed [sin] even if you are not the homosexual
