Chapter 8: Understanding God’s Word

I am just picking up my spiritual pen again to write for God. It has
been four weeks since we learned of Jackie’s inoperable and untreatable pancreatic cancer. That is the medical profession’s judgment of her illness. However, her condition does seem to be responding to the power of prayer and to the metabolic [cell] nutrients that God has brought to our attention.
As you seek a better understanding of God’s Word, you should realize that God expects you to do your part. I.E. Would you pray about your lung cancer to God and then still keep on smoking cigarettes? Obviously not!
Yet it might surprise you at just how many Christians have that mentality. I am also mindful of many Christians who will tell you to ignore symptoms that you may have. Yes, you heard me correctly. These people reason that if you actually admit that you have an illness [name your health problem here], then, you will have that illness [or health problem] for sure. Does that
make sense or sound stupid? Yes, I have heard that reasoning from many charismatic Christians in the “name it and claim it” crowd [sect].
Do you really want to understand God’s Word? Then understand first
of all that God has given you the “power of a strong mind.” If something sounds stupid to you, then maybe it really is. If it just doesn’t make sense, then maybe it’s because it is nonsense. When it comes to understanding God’s Word, realize that is exactly what God intended for you to do.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim. 1:7
When you understand God’s Word, you can begin to reason as the Psalmist does. You understand in your heart that “your times are in His hand.” In the case of a serious illness in your family, you also understand that they are in God’s hand just as you are! Then, all of you do your part.
“But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God. My times are in Your hand.’ ” Psalm 31:14-15
When You Trust God, You’ll Understand!
