Myth—Everybody Gets To Go

In verses 14-30, Jesus teaches the following:

1. The kingdom is likened to a man traveling. 2. The traveler gave his three servants his resources to manage. 3. The first servant who received five talents doubled it. 4. The second servant who received two talents doubled it.

5. The third servant who received one talent buried it out of fear. 6. His lord rewarded the first servant saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

7. His lord rewarded the second servant saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” 8. The third servant said to his lord, “I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have

not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.” 9. His lord castigated the third servant saying, “You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather

where I have not scattered seed. Therefore you ought to have deposited my money with bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.” 10. The third servant’s returned talent was given to the first servant.

a. For to everyone who has, more will be given. b. From who does not have, even what he has will be taken. 11. “Cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Christ is speaking to his servants and makes it clear that we have a duty to be “obedient and profitable” to God’s will — while on earth. We cannot be lazy and claim ignorance. It won’t stick in Heaven. All three

were servants of a master. In this analogy, only two of the three were allowed to “Enter into the joy of the Lord.” Jesus teaches the spiritual duty we have to be profitable for God, his Father. We cannot claim to be profitable to God if we support immorality. Such behavior is not taking care

of His business. In the first teaching, the foolish are locked out. In this second teaching the spiritually unprofitable person is thrown into darkness.
